Where the Chow Chow comes from

The Chow Chow is one of the oldest breeds, from northern China, where it was used for hunting, herding and guarding. Its blue-black tongue and lion-like mane are distinctive.

Personality and daily life

Aloof, loyal and quiet. Chows are devoted to their family and reserved with strangers, and often prefer to be left alone.

Chows are dignified and reserved. Their thick coat needs regular brushing and heat is hard on them.

Exercise, grooming and health

Moderate exercise. The thick coat needs brushing a few times a week and sheds heavily. Overheating, eye problems and hip dysplasia are common.

Is a Chow Chow right for you?

Calm, experienced owners in cooler climates.

  • Best with older children, always supervised
  • Can be stubborn, better for experienced owners
