Where the English Bulldog comes from

The Bulldog was bred in England for bull-baiting, a cruel sport banned in 1835. Breeders then softened the temperament, and today's Bulldog is a gentle companion with a much heavier build.

Personality and daily life

Calm, loyal and dignified, with a stubborn streak. Bulldogs are affectionate with family and tolerant with children.

Bulldogs are relaxed homebodies who like short strolls and long naps. Heat and breathing problems are real risks, so keep them cool and lean.

Exercise, grooming and health

Gentle walks and a lot of rest. They overheat quickly and often snore, and many have breathing, skin and joint problems. Wipe the face folds daily. Choose a breeder carefully, and budget for vet care.

Is a English Bulldog right for you?

Relaxed households in cool climates. Not a dog for jogging, hot weather or tight budgets.
