Where the Siberian Husky comes from

Huskies were bred by the Chukchi people in northeastern Siberia to pull light sleds over long distances in extreme cold. They reached Alaska in the early 1900s and became famous in sled races.

Personality and daily life

Friendly, mischievous and independent. Huskies love people but not obedience, and many are escape artists. They howl more than they bark.

Huskies are escape artists who need serious daily exercise. They shed heavily and are happiest in cooler climates with a secure yard.

Exercise, grooming and health

Two hours of hard exercise a day suits them. The thick double coat sheds heavily and needs brushing. They cope poorly with heat. A very secure fence is essential, and they are poor off-lead.

Is a Siberian Husky right for you?

Active owners in cooler climates who enjoy running or hiking. Not for first-time owners or apartments.

  • Needs space, so not ideal for small apartments
  • Can be stubborn, better for experienced owners
  • Sheds a lot
