Where the Poodle (Standard) comes from

Despite their French image, Standard Poodles started in Germany as duck-retrieving water dogs. The classic show clip once helped them swim while protecting joints and organs.

Personality and daily life

Intelligent, proud and playful. Poodles learn quickly, enjoy tricks, and bond closely with their people. They can become anxious or bored if ignored.

Standard Poodles are among the smartest breeds and shed very little. They need regular professional clipping and plenty of mental work.

Exercise, grooming and health

About an hour of exercise plus training or puzzle games. The curly coat barely sheds but needs brushing every few days and a professional clip every 6 to 8 weeks. Watch for hip problems, bloat and Addison's disease.

Is a Poodle (Standard) right for you?

People who want a trainable dog that sheds little, and allergy-prone households (though no dog is hypoallergenic).

  • Easy to train, good for beginners
  • Sheds little
  • Needs regular grooming
