Where the Shih Tzu comes from

Shih Tzus were palace dogs in China, bred for centuries to be small, long-haired companions. The name means lion, though they behave nothing like one.

Personality and daily life

Affectionate, outgoing and playful. Shih Tzus love being with people and are good with children if handled gently.

Shih Tzus were bred as lap companions. Their long coat needs daily brushing or a short trim.

Exercise, grooming and health

Short walks suffice. The long coat needs daily brushing, or keep it clipped short. Eye problems and breathing issues can occur.
