Where the Komondor comes from

Komondors are Hungarian livestock guardians, with a corded white coat that blended with the sheep and protected them from wolves. Their ancestors came with nomadic peoples centuries ago.

Personality and daily life

Calm, serious and protective. Komondors are devoted to family and wary of strangers, and think for themselves.

Komondors have corded coats and guard instincts. They need space, early socialisation and lots of coat care.

Exercise, grooming and health

Moderate exercise and a lot of coat care. The cords need separating and drying after bathing. Hip dysplasia and bloat occur.

Is a Komondor right for you?

Experienced owners with space and the time to care for the coat.

  • Needs space, so not ideal for small apartments
  • Best with older children, always supervised
  • Can be stubborn, better for experienced owners
  • Sheds little
  • Needs regular grooming
