Where the German Shorthaired Pointer comes from
German breeders developed the Shorthaired Pointer in the 1800s by crossing Spanish pointers, bloodhounds and other hunting dogs. The aim was one dog that could find, point and retrieve on land and in water.
Personality and daily life
Smart, affectionate and full of enthusiasm. They love their family, get along with children and other dogs, and hate being left alone.
This breed wants a job and a lot of running. In a home without enough exercise, it gets loud and destructive.
Exercise, grooming and health
At least two hours of exercise a day, ideally running off lead in a safe place. The short coat needs only a weekly brush. Hip dysplasia, bloat and ear infections are the main health concerns.
