Where the French Bulldog comes from

The Frenchie developed in the 1800s when English lace workers took small bulldogs to France. Parisians adopted them, and they became a fashionable city companion.

Personality and daily life

Playful, affectionate and a little clownish. Frenchies love company and make friends easily, though they can be stubborn when training.

Frenchies suit small homes and short walks. Their flat faces mean they overheat easily, so avoid hard exercise in warm weather.

Exercise, grooming and health

Short walks and indoor play are enough. Their flat faces make breathing and heat tolerance a real concern, so keep them cool and at a healthy weight. Skin fold care and spine problems are common. Vet bills can be high.

Is a French Bulldog right for you?

Apartment dwellers, owners who are home a lot, and people in mild climates. Not for hot places or hard exercise.

  • Copes well with apartment living
  • Easy to groom
